The ugly start of something beautiful.

If you know me you know I’m good at making pretty pictures. You might say I was designed for it. You might have even asked me to make you some kind of pretty picture. If you know me you know I’m a graphic designer.

If you don’t know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Jessica Herzanek. Most will call me “Jess” and my Dad calls me “Jest” because I’m the best and he thinks he’s witty.

My resume states that I received my degree in May 2011 and have been working ever since; gaining experience, clientele, and refining my trade.

A designer’s most valuable tool is their Apple computer. Without this they are crippled and frankly useless. Three months ago I was crippled. I sat in Starbucks with every intention to complete two freelance gigs – one logo for a photographer and another for a shop in Hawaii. Instead, I watched my computer slowly freeze up and die.

My heart sank. I watched everything of value to me and my career slowly slip out of my hands. My whole portfolio, all the files I had for clients, all the photos I had taken around the world, and the valuable software programs had all vanished.

The days and weeks to follow were filled with “Apple Genius” appointments, false hope, hoops to jump through, and the realization that it was all out of my control. There was nothing I could do to change my situation.

The Apple employee was excited to inform me that my computer was not broken. There was a simple repair that needed to take place for $56. I painfully watched his face go from excited and eager to help, to confused when I told him I didn’t have the money, and I would have to come back when I do.

This was the ugly start of something beautiful. I had numerous people come alongside me with compassion and assistance. Over the past three months I now have over $300 donated toward replacement parts and someone I’ve never met before, donated their time and expertise to repair the computer and preserve the files.

I am no longer crippled! I have my computer back, in hand, faster and better then before. Three months ago I was emotionally preparing myself for the life-change this was going to be and today I am rejoicing for the amazing community that surrounds me.

To those of you who have offered your assistance: I cannot thank you enough! I am humbled by your willingness to be the answer to my problem and I am thankful you chose to be involved in my life. You make my heart sing.

  1. Jess you get back what you give and this is a true testament to what you have given. I am excited to see where God takes you and what you are going to experience through out your life. Love you and hope to see you at Christmas.
